I got one of these little pouches from Tuff Possum Gear recently and it’s been fantastic. I like to carry small individual tools that are each more effective than their multi-tool equivalent. This tool pouch allows me to do that while only having to take one thing in and out of my pocket. Its strong, perfectly sized, made in the USA, and priced fairly.

Sea Turtle Toothbrushes

A few years ago I read somewhere that every plastic toothbrush ever made is just sitting in a landfill or the ocean. My ensuing search led me to Sea Turtle. Their brushes are made of bamboo and the bristles are plant based so the hole thing will decompose in a reasonable amount of time. They donate a portion of proceeds to conservation efforts and their corn starch floss picks are pretty good too.

I recently realized what a great package manager brew is. It works on any Linux distro and macOS. It provides tons of packages and updates them very quickly. brew bundle lets you define which packages you want (including from other package managers like flatpak or cargo) in a simple .Brewfile. Plus the project has helpful docs and tooling for adding new packages.

I’ve long wished I could use CSS custom properties to DRY up my breakpoint media queries. The CSS @custom-media at-rule looks like an even better solution. It’s implemented in Firefox version 148 behind a flag, looking forward to seeing it implemented in all browsers!

Bucket Builder

These 5 gallon buckets lids are so cool! You combine them with a few buckets and some basic 2x4s to create temporary benches, saw horses, work tables, or whatever else you can think of. When you’re done they collapse back down for easy storage. That flexibility has been super handy in my garage.

Their prices are very reasonable and they even have revenue sharing agreements in place with many of the open source projects they host. It can also be a great way to sample the benefits of self hosting before you spend the time to set up your own server(s).

Helix is a terminal based text editor which I started using a few months ago and quickly came to love. Its incredibly fast, full of features, and available cross platform. I found Helix easier to get started with than other editors I’ve tried thanks to a great tutorial, thorough documentation, and very little configuration needed.

zoxide is a fantastic cross platform tool for more easily navigating from the command line. It feels magical to type just the beginning of a folder name rather than the entire path to that folder. I alias it as cd so I don’t have to fight my muscle memory if I’m working on a machine or server where it isn’t installed.

The work The Ocean Cleanup is doing is an amazing example of how an impossibly large task can be achieved one step at a time. I love how they’re simultaneously addressing the problem (the Great Pacific Garbage Patch) and the sources of the problem with projects like their river interceptors.

I’ve used a Light Phone 2 since 2019 and have really enjoyed it. Five years later and the team is still pushing out new software updates and doing it without charging any sort of subscription fee or advertising revenue. That’s great customer service.
